My son was so stoked to have a birthday party this year, he didn't have one the year before. Not because we're not mean- he wanted a super expensive gift, so we gave him the options of either A: having a small get together with family with his big gift from us or B: a big birthday party with friends with little gifts from us. Clearly, he chose option A and broke said expensive gift within a month. 😒
So this year, when I had the strength to tell him that I didn't think the lock down would lift before his birthday. Which unfortunately meant no party- he was very upset, and for good reason. These poor kids lives had already been completely turned around, they couldn't go to the parks, play dates, school, library, stores, etc, they were stuck at home in a strange new world with new rules to learn. And for some, they also had to learn to be okay with not celebrating their birthday or holidays the way they used to.
Considering how sad he was about not being able to have a party, plus the fact that I couldn't even make up for it by taking him to fun places to celebrate. I swallowed my pride and asked my Facebook people to send him cards. I was incredibly overwhelmed by how many people were more than happy to participate! I'd never considered asking this before, because I knew we could always do everything in our power to make him feel special. However, this year I knew we needed a little help doing that, and boy did he feel the love!
I also scheduled a few Zoom Party meetings. To ensure there would be a decent amount of party attendees I posted them to his class page, to Facebook, as well as text it to some people. I felt annoying- for sure, but you have to go a little hard for your kids. He loved being able to see and spend time chatting with people that he missed.
Of course I also got balloons, decorations, cake, wrapped presents, etc to make it feel like a party. He had a great day, he got to choose all his favorite meals, and was so thankful for all the extra love and attention he received. My heart was so full of love and gratitude for everyone that took the time to make him feel special.
